Laser Nail Treatment Q&A
What is laser nail treatment?
Laser nail treatment is an in-office procedure that uses targeted light energy to destroy nail fungi and improve nail healthy nail growth. If you have toenail fungus and it doesn’t respond to other types of treatment, laser therapy can provide lasting relief.
Who can benefit from laser nail treatment?
You might benefit from laser nail treatment if your toenails are:
- Thick
- Yellow or brown
- Brittle or ragged
- Distorted
Laser nail treatment also provides an effective way to reduce the odor associated with fungal infections.
How does laser nail treatment work?
Dr. Christie and the team provide laser nail treatment with the FDA-approved LunulaLaser®. At the beginning of your appointment, you remove your shoes and socks.
Then, you place one foot into the FDA-approved LunulaLaser® device for a 12 minute treatment period. Once finished with your treatment(s), you come back to see Dr. Christie weekly for subsequent treatments, pain free.
The laser device emits light energy at specific wavelengths that penetrate your toenail, treating your nail bed where the fungus lives. Over time, the lightwave energy destroys the fungus as well as the infected areas of your surrounding tissue and nail. What’s more, laser nail treatment has a sterilizing effect that prevents new fungi from taking hold.
How many laser nail treatments will I need?
Laser nail treatment doesn’t emit enough energy to destroy your fungal infection completely. As a result, it’s essential to undergo a series of treatments weekly over several weeks.
At each visit, Dr. Christie monitors your progress and makes adjustments to the treatment plan as necessary.
How long does it take for laser nail treatment to work?
The length of time that it takes for laser nail treatment to work depends on various factors, including the severity of the original infection and your commitment to Dr. Christie’s treatment plan. Some people experience a significant improvement in as little as three months, but for others, it can take up to a year. Be patient and attend each of your checkups as scheduled.
Is laser nail treatment safe?
Laser nail treatment is safe and usually well-tolerated. What’s more, the LunulaLaser is FDA-approved, meaning the benefits of treatment outweigh any potential risks.
After each session, it’s normal to experience mild warming sensations. Dr. Christie explains how to keep your toes clean and dry while they’re healing. Follow his instructions to reduce the risk of infection and other complications.
